Welcome to our writing webpage.  Our current unit focuses on the writings of illustrator and author Chris Van Allsburg.  Here you will find all you need to work on your fantasy fiction story for the Mysteries of Harris Burdick Story Writing Contest and practice your spelling.  The daily writing assignments are a guide to reach your publishing date. Things to do...

Fantasy Fiction assignment:

Story Contest due date: January 15th.

  • Complete a prewriting activity for your fantasy fiction story. You may choose a graphic organizer to help you get started planning your story.  Make sure to choose a planning sheet you like and print it out.
  • Complete the spelling activity for spelling words in Units 13-17
  • Write one sentence with each of the first 15 spelling words.  Look up any words you do not understand before you use them in a sentence.
  • Continue planning your story using your graphic organizer.  Really think about your characters, setting and the surprising event you want to include. 
  • Extra - Read an example of a modern fantasy fiction story written about one of the pictures from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.
  • Share your graphic organizer with your parents. Clearly tell them about the setting and who your characters are.  Print out this questionnaire form and give it to your parents before you share.
  • Study your spelling words (Flashcards may help!)
  • Begin the first copy of your fantasy fiction story.  Focus on the beginning of your story.  How will you introduce your character?  From whose perspective will you write the story?  Write for at least 20 minutes.
  • Study for spelling test on the first 15 words!
  • Read your writing from yesterday out loud before you begin drafting.  Make sure it makes sense so far.
  • Continue writing the first draft of your story.  Make sure to look back at your graphic organizer.  Write for at least 20 minutes.
  • Take a spelling test on the first 15 words.
 You can use these days to draft, revise and edit your story.  Each day's assignment is our suggested time line but you may follow your own speed with the January 15th deadline in mind.
  • Each day this week continue with the writing process (draft, revise, edit) on your fantasy fiction story.  Work at least 20 minutes daily on your story. 
  • Write one sentence with each of the spelling words from 16-30.  Look up any words you do not understand before you use them in a sentence.
  • Read your work aloud to someone or alone.
  • Continue with writing process
  • Study your spelling words (Flashcards may help!)
  • Continue with writing process
  • Study for spelling test on words 16-30!
  • Continue with writing process
  • Take a spelling test on words 16-30
  • Copy ready for publishing due today!
This week you will publish your story including illustrations.  Remember the rules for publishing a story!
  • Write one sentence with each of the spelling words from 30-45.  Look up any words you do not understand before you use them in a sentence.
  • Continue publishing your story with illustrations.
  • Study your spelling words (Flashcards may help!)
  • Continue publishing your story with illustrations.
  • Study for spelling test on words 31-45!
  • Continue publishing your story with illustrations.
  • Take a spelling test on words 31-45.
  • Finish your published copy. You may use extra time to illustrate.
