News from the Middle
School
MS Spring
Trips
The middle school students
were involved in a variety of activities during their Spring
trips. All students participated in research projects
related to various regions of Venezuela. Grade 6 students
learned about endangered species in the Los Llanos area.
Grade 7 and 8 researched issues related to global warming in
both Curacao and Merida.
The students who participated in a school based experience,
researched these same areas of study along with hearing
presentations by a high school biology class, shared some
of their findings with a first grade group of students,
learning about some Venezuelan artists by visiting several
art galleries, and finally watched the Oscar award winning
film “An Inconvenient Truth”.
Every year students look forward to this spring experience
and this year proved no different in its richness. |

Eye
Dissection
Science students in the 8th
grade recently performed a dissection on a cow eye.
They were expected to follow, very carefully, a
procedure which would allow them to remove and observe
various structures within the eye. The eye dissection
was linked to our study of the nervous system, giving
the students hands on experience with one of the sensory
organs that pick up stimuli from the environment so that
the body can respond appropriately. The students were
able to remove such structures as the cornea, iris,
lens, and vitreous humour. They were also able to
observe the retina, blind spot and optic nerve. Other
than the smell and the exploding aqueous humour, the
students seemed to enjoy the exploration of the cow eye.
