The Beep Test
What
is the beep test?
The beep test is also known as the multi-stage fitness test, pacer test, or
shuttle run test, and it is used by PE teachers and coaches to give us a good
indication of the level of cardio-vascular fitness of our students here at ECA.
Why do we need to have our students complete the beep test? Cardiovascular fitness is crucial to improve lifelong health; the better your fitness level the less likely we are to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, back pain and cancers. It can help us to maintain a healthy body weight and gives us more energy. The test can help students to recognize their own fitness level so that they can work to improve their fitness.
How do we run the beep test? The test is given during PE class in grades 2-10 and is taken twice per quarter. The test involves running continuously between two points that are 20 m apart. These runs are synchronized with a pre-recorded audio tape or CD, which beeps at set intervals. As the test proceeds, the interval between each successive beep reduces, forcing the student to run faster over the course of the test. The students must keep up with the speed of the beeps to stay in the test. The scores are the total number of shuttles the students completed during the test.
